The winners of the 2015 Forme dell’Olio contest

The awards ceremony for the second edition of the “Forme dell’olio” packaging and innovation contest took place in Milan during the 2015 Olio Officina Food festival. The first prize was awarded to “i-Talian Olive Oil”, a company headquartered in Puglia.

The awards were presented on Saturday, January 24, by the director of Olio Officina, Mr Luigi Caricato, and Compasso d’Oro winner Professor Gianni Pasini, president of the Jury. During the ceremony, space was given to describe the current trends in olive oil packaging.

“The idea behind the contest – states Luigi Caricato – is to raise awareness among oil producers about this issue, so that they are motivated to break with the past and create new, original forms of packaging. Doubtlessly the olive oil sector has made great improvements in product quality, but much less has been done with respect to presentation packaging. The contest is therefore an incentive to seek alternative packaging methods to those we have grown accustomed to”.

2015 “OLIO OFFICINA – LE FORME DELL’OLIO” CONTEST: THE WINNERS

Winners of the second edition of the “Olio Officina – Le Forme dell’Olio” contest are the following companies.

First place
Single varietal oil box
“i-TALIAN OLIVE OIL” Srl
Bari
The bottle case has a remarkable visual impact, with a cardboard external structure and an internal one in plexiglass, designed to hold four bottles of single varietal olive oil. The result is a solid storage and shipping case that once freed of its cardboard cover, becomes a practical and elegant container for the bottles of oil. In the kitchen, the cook can therefore easily pick out the bottle of oil deemed best for the dish prepared. Overall, the container is pleasing to the eye, for it is both practical and essential, devoid of all trimmings, and has a modern, even youthful design. The plexiglass box can be used again and again, since new bottles can always be purchased and placed in it. Worthy of note is the wording on both the cardboard and plexiglass boxes in correspondence to each variety of oil (Frantoio, Coratina, Taggiasca and Tonda Iblea), with food-pairing suggestions. The bottles are well wrapped and labelled, and each type of oil has a label in a different shade of colour. The graphics are clear and the aesthetics pleasing. The package communicates and promotes culture, which is highly commendable, by offering useful indications to improve the quality of oil consumption.

Second place
Denominacion de origen Baena /ecologico
CORTIJO DE SUERTE ALTA S.L.
Madrid (Spain)

The company has done a perfect job, taking great care of both the inside and outside appearance of the presentation package. The visual impact is stunning. It immediately transmits a sense of security, and one cannot but be impressed by the care put into every detail. There is also the attention displayed towards the environment, with the choice of using recycled material to make the shock-absorbent lining. The aim of the company is not only to ensure the quality of its extra virgin olive oils. It also is concerned with the integrity of the package, so that no damage will occur to the bottles during handling and shipping. The box in precious wood opens up like a book, everything appears to be well and neatly wrapped. The message received is one of elegance, opulence, innovation and classic beauty. The bottles inside the box are in heavy glass, in a rather unusual dark shade of colour. Their flattened shape makes them easy to handle and their elegant labels have a clear graphic design.

Third place
Tamìa
Sergio delle Monache Srl
Ucciano Vetralla (Viterbo)
The cardboard presentation package is a dark, greyish-green colour, with an olive-green satin bow on top. Inside there are the three single varietal oil bottles, i.e. Canino, Green monocultivar Maurino, and Gold, an organic extra virgin oil. Upon opening the box, the bottles appear in all their elegance, each safely nestled inside a comfortable niche. The impact on the purchaser is remarkable, because it can stir powerful emotions, thanks to such detail as the embossed fingerprint on the on the strong, well-crafted box in heavy-duty cardboard. The fingerprint itself, the shape of which evokes that of an olive, has two leaves on top. This imprint is a company hallmark, and is also present on each bottle, albeit in different shades, according to the type of oil. The print would seem to suggest that the oils are a unique, distinctive product of the territory from which they come, hence substantiating the idea of a valuable gift. The bottles, in dark glass, are well wrapped and labelled and the label itself, with its stylized graphics, is black with white lettering.
