Olive oil stocked In Italy. Update of 23 September 2020

The Report is drawn up by the ICQRF on data recorded in the olive oil computerized registers. On 23 September 2020, the operators present in the online olive oil register were 24,217, representative of 26,322 active premises. Olive oils: 263,585 tons in stocks. Compared to 16 September 2020 a 1.8% reduction was recorded (268,366 tons). Stocks keep being higher than the stocks recorded the same period of last year (+47,5%).

Olive oil stocked In Italy. Update of 23 September 2020

The stock of olive oil in Italy on 23 September 2020 is 263,585 tons. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVO) represents the 71.3% of the stock. Among the EVO oil, the 52.3% (98,219 tons) is of Italian origin and the 39.5% is of EU origin. The extra-EU olive oil stocks (just 9,408 tons) and blend olive oils (6,020 tons) are marginal.

Where is physically stocked the olive oil in Italy?

Half of the national olive oil (50%) is stocked in the regions of southern Italy, with the significant contribution of the regions Puglia and Calabria (31.7% and 10.4%, respectively). At the provincial level, 15.4% of olive oil is stocked in the province of Bari, 10.7% in Perugia and 7.7% in Barletta- Andria-Trani province.

At the regional level, the top 3 regions (Puglia, Tuscany, Umbria) hold the 58.9% of the total national stock.

At provincial level, it is clear a significant concentration of olive oil stocks: in the top 10 provinces is stocked the 66.8% of the Italian olive oil. Among these provinces, there are five from the central- northern Italy: Perugia, Lucca, Florence, Imperia, and Siena.

Which olive oil in the olive mill Italy?

Despite the large number of GIs present (47), out of a total of 10.0 million litres of GI olive oil in stock, the PDO Terra di Bari represent itself the 58.9% and the first 20 names 97.2% of the total GIs olive oil stocked in Italy.

Overall, the PDO / PGI olive oil in stock is equal to 3.5% of the total olive oil stocked in Italy and represents 4.9% of the stored EVO oil.

The total stock of extra virgin olive oiland virgin olive oilfrom organic farming amounts to 29,104 tons, almost exclusively EVO (99.7%). It is a relevant figure since the EVO Bio constitutes 15.5% of the overall EVO stocked in Italy.

Compared to 15 September 2019, olive oil stocks are 47.5% higher. This data is mainly justified by the changes in EVO oil stock (+63.0%), and, in particular, by the changes in stock of the Italian EVO. Indeed, the Italian EVO oil stock is 45,456 tons (+86.2%) higher than the stock registered on 15 September 2019.

The higher quantities of lampante olive oil (+39.2%), olive-pomace oil (+13.7%) and olive oil and refined olive oil (+16.0%) stocks deserve to be mentioned.

Compared to 16 September 2020, a 1.8% reduction of olive oil stocks was recorded. The reduction in EVO oil stocks (-2.3%) is due to the reduction in Italian EVO oil (-2.7%) and EU EVO oil (-2.1%).

No remarkable differences were observed in the other oil categories.
