The winners of the 2016 “Le Forme dell’Olio” contest

The winners of the contest organized by Olio Officina are the Italian "Fratelli De Cecco" in the presentation packaging class, and the Spanish company "Casas de Hualdo" for the Horeca and mass retail channels category. The product line made by another Italian firm, "Domenico Manca-San Giuliano", received a special award, whereas a limited edition by "Mia Italy" won the prize for originality of style

The winners of the 2016 “Le Forme dell’Olio” contest

The results of the third edition of this contest are quite encouraging. After many decades, we are finally witnessing some changes in olive oil packaging, a field that up to very recently has been unable to break its bonds with tradition and adopt new shapes and styles.

According to the organizers, there is still much to do, though a number of companies have now become more sensitive to change. Quality, according to Mr. Luigi Caricato, the mastermind of this contest, cannot be limited to the intrinsic value of oil, its nutritional properties and sensory features, but must also encompass its appearance, and take into account the functionality and practicality of the vessel. It is necessary to invest more in this sector, and also research new packaging materials.

On January 13, 2016, the jury of the “Le forme dell’olio” contest, after careful scrutiny of all the samples, announced the winners of the two categories, namely presentation packaging and oils destined to the Horeca (Hotel Restaurant, Catering) and mass retail channels.
There were also other prizes: a special award for the product lines, one for originality of style and one for innovation. This year however the latter award was not given, because although the overall quality of the entries was extremely high, the jury failed to find elements of outstanding novelty.
A collective entry deserved a special commendation for its social and educational merits: this was a series of terracotta oil vessels, resulting from the collaboration between a women-operated farm, a cultural circle devoted to education, a small town in Apulia and a terracotta factory.

The award ceremony took place on Friday, January 22, at the fifth Olio Officina Festival, the celebrated event devoted to olive oil and dressings that is held every year in Milan, Italy.

According to Gianni Pasini, distinguished designer and president of the jury, true innovation must start from the ease of use of the container, and not its aesthetics, which though doubtlessly important and appealing is not so crucial.

The world of oil must go one step further and renovate itself, breaking free from tradition. We must devise new shapes, declares Mr. Caricato, creator and organizer of the contest. Inventiveness must not be so extreme as to distort the essence of oil, but its vessel should certainly reflect a modern, even futuristic style, like we often see for other types of food.
