Antico Borgo, the scent and flavours of the Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino trine

Antico Borgo is one of the many oils produced by Terre dell’Etruria, a leading oil-making company in Tuscany, with many olive groves in what is considered as one of the best olive-growing regions in Italy.

The company stands out for both the quantity and quality of olive oil it produces. It is a model for many cooperatives, an example that many believe should be followed.

The oil we examined, Antico Borgo, is a Tuscan PGI extra virgin made with three celebrated varieties of olives: Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino.

Terre dell’Etruria has skilfully combined these three cultivars, creating a pleasant and extremely versatile oil, perfect for a vast array of applications. The blend has been carefully studied to satisfy the average consumer without foregoing the strong sensory traits of Tuscan oil.

TASTE TEST

An unclouded, glossy green oil with warm golden hues.

The nose perceives clear notes of grass and a distinct hint of artichoke. The aromas are pleasant, intense but not too overpowering.

Soft and velvety on the palate, with a harmonious balance of bitterness and pungency; if at first the oil seems a little sweet, it then gradually and gracefully evolves, revealing its true personality.

Its most impressive features in the mouth are doubtlessly its smoothness, green flavour and captivating combination of bitter and piquant notes.

The tactile feel and kinesthetic sensations are beautifully rich, and as a consequence, only very little is needed to dress and add flavour to the dishes it is drizzled upon.

The final notes are a slight pungency, and meadow grass.

The 500-mL bottle is very reasonably priced, considering the quality of the oil and how little is needed. It is particularly recommended, should one wish to buy a genuine Tuscan oil without spending an outrageous sum of money. It is an extremely versatile product, ideal both for dressing and cooking.
