Milan in April

The sun that is trying to find its way back to Milan from winter, the restaurant keepers that prepare their terraces for international visits, the great Italian coffee coming from that smart everlasting invention called Moka Express. Those are the first images popping in my mind when getting packet for Milan in April. Every year I get attracted to travel to this city because of the international Design week.

Who am I?
My name is Remi van Oers, a 27 year young designer from the Netherlands. Graduated in 2010 at the Design Academy Eindhoven and directly afterwards I started my own design studio from the ground up. Being a designer and entrepreneur for three years now feels great. Because of my interest in design, in culture, in innovation I feel so at home in this lovely energetic city called Milan.

Having passed the only 1 hour and 15 minute taking flight it feels great to set foot in Milan again. It has somewhat become a tradition to come back for this designfull week every year. This year I am not exposing new work myself so it gives great freedom to check all the designers and brands to get filled with inspiration and collaborations. This year is the sixth time I visit the Salone del Mobile and the much more vibrating Fuori Salone together with my girlfriend Anke Dekkers. Anke is focussed on how global culture is shaping as a trend annalist, so us together result in an open, yet critical view walking around evaluating and discussing all we see.

Our design day in Milan has a great framework which did not change much in the last six years, it goes like this: getting up, take a fresh shower, get breakfast (yes, in great Italian style including cookies), drink coffee together with our friend & B&B host Silvia. chatting with Silvia during this one hour taking breakfast we talk life and discuss the world in the complete spectrum. From Italian coffee to why Gaudi from Barcelona was a genius; nothing gets surpassed. Maybe this way of starting the day sets apart Anke and me from some other visitors. We try to understand, try to be included in the place or the country we then are staying. When you would choose for a hotel you might sort of get blocked in a space protected to be not much different from what you would experience when you would stay in a hotel in your home town. The contact with Silvia and the opportunity to feel this charmed and passionate Italian life first hand is something extraordinary you can’t buy, maybe can’t even design..

After that great morning start, we go travel by metropolitan to visit all the with design filled spots spread in the city of Milan. We try to visit as much as we can, from Brera to Lambrate, to Tortona etc.. Becoming more and more critical every year I think is the curse that almost every designer has. In my own work I constantly question; is this good enough? Is this going to help people? Has my idea enough reason for being. Those are the same questions you take with you when looking around and talk to the exhibitors. Often I see things that make me happy but very little I see ideas or executing’s that really make me smile. Believing strongly that design is and can be so much more than aesthetics alone, I miss that risk taking, that inner will to do it not only different but better, a little too much in the designers and the brands while they are showing of their work. But then when you see it, when it’s so good, so innovative and still aesthetically wow.. Then that -not often- smile makes it worth taking all the effort to come to Milan.

Thank you Milan & thank you Italy, for your hospitality, design and great coffee, looking forward seeing all this again next year.
