Italian certified extra virgin olive oil on the rise

Increase of 2.1% in 2013 for the production of certified extra virgin olive oils after the fall of 2012. It appears from the report Ismea Qualivita presented yesterday in Rome in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture Maurizio Martina.

Italy remains the world leader of the sector to the number of certified products, with 269 products entered in the register EU, of which 161 DOP, IGP 106, 2 STG. A fund that guarantees the quality through 120 Consortia recognized by MIPAAF, 48 authorized Certification Bodies, with more than 60,600 inspections and 75,700 analytical checks (sample of 150 products).

The volume produced equals 1.27 million tons, over one third is exported for a value of about 2.4 billion euro, with an increase of 5% on an annual basis; a production turnover of 6.6 billion Euros (consumption turnover registered about 13 billion euro). “The Italian system of food products protected designation – explained Ezio Castiglione, President of ISMEA – is in good health. Exports, however, remains the only driving force. Crucial will be the outcome of the negotiations about the bilateral agreement with the US. The inclusion of the protection of marks of origin among the main points of the deal is a major step forward.”

In 2013 certified production as a whole – 1.27 million tons – decreased by 2.7%. This decline was mainly caused by the decrease in production of vegetables and cereals (-7%), while cheese and meat products maintained stable volumes. Down slightly (-0.9%) the certificate of balsamic vinegars, while fresh meat (+ 14.4%) is on the rise from 3 years.
