Olive oil stocked in Italy. Update of 31 December 2022

The Report is drawn up by the Icqrf on data recorded in the olive oil computerized registers (Rto), which at 31 December 2022 are 22,041. Olive oils: 310,751 tons in stocks. Compared to 30 November 2022 a 15.5% increase was recorded (269,012 tons). Stocks are 3.9% higher than the stocks recorded the same period of last year

Olive oil stocked in Italy. Update of 31 December 2022

The stock of olive oil in Italy on 31 December 2022 is 310,751 tons. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVO) represents the 75.5% of the stock. In the category of EVO oil, stocks of olive oil of Italian origin (146,213 t) represent the 62.3%, followed by those of EU origin 31.7%. The extra-EU olive oil stocks and blend olive oils are marginal.

Where is physically stocked the olive oil in Italy?

More than half of the national olive oil (54%) is stocked in the regions of southern Italy, with the significant contribution of the regions Puglia and Calabria (37.8% and 8.4%, respectively). At the provincial level, 19.2% of olive oil is stocked in the province of Bari, and 9.3% in Barletta-Andria- Trani.

At the regional level, the top 4 regions (Puglia, Tuscany, Umbria, and Calabria) hold the 70.6% of the total national stock.

At provincial level, it is clear a significant concentration of olive oil stocks: in the top 10 provinces is stocked the 66.4% of the Italian olive oil.

Which olive oil in the olive mill Italy?

Despite the large number of GIs present (49), out of a total of 25.5 million litres of GI olive oil in stock, higher than the stocks recorded the 31 December 2021 (24.9 million litres), the PDO Terra di Bari represent the 36.6% and the first 20 names 97.1% of the total GIs olive oil stocked in Italy.
Overall, the PDO / PGI olive oil in stock is equal to 7.6% of the total olive oil stocked in Italy and represents 10.0% of the stored EVO oil.

The total stock of “extra virgin olive oil” and “virgin olive oil” from organic farming amounts to 41,268 tons (+4.6% of the value recorded the same period of last year), almost exclusively EVO (99.8%), equal to 17.6% of the overall EVO stocked in Italy. The olive oil BIO is mainly stocked in Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany, and Calabria.

Olive oil stocks are higher (+3.9%) compared to 31 December 2021. This is mainly related to the increase of EVO (+4.1%) and pomace olive oil (+10.4%).
On regard of EVO oil, it is important to remark that Italian EVO oil stocked (146,213 t) are like the stock of December 2021.

Olive oil stocks 31 December 2022 vs. 30 November 2022

Compared to 30 November 2022, a 15.5% increase of olive oil stocks is recorded. This is related to the increase of all categories of olive oil.
The total increase is mainly due to the EVO oil (+13.2%) either of Italian (+12,509 t), EU origin (+11,258 t) and extra-EU origin (+2,747 t).
Moreover, deserve to be mentioned the increase recorded for pomace olive oil (+34.6%) and lampante (+35.8%).
